Lead: A toxic heavy metal, lead can leach into your water from aging plumbing, lead-based solder, and lead service lines. Not every American with a lead service line is continuously drinking high levels of lead, thanks to water utilities’ use of treatments like orthophosphate, which prevent water from corroding lead pipes and drawing out the toxic metal. However, even at low levels, lead exposure can result in a range of health problems, particularly for children and pregnant women. Although new lead pipes were federally banned in 1986, and states came into compliance in the three years following, hundreds of thousands of lead service lines remain across the country. Lead is a dangerous neurotoxin that poisons thousands of kids each year.
